I think the that fundamental difference between Conservatives and Liberals comes down to this one question: Are there absolutes. I know after this question how a conversation is going to go and very rarely does it deviate from what I have come to expect. The reason for this is that the question forms the basis for all of our knowledge and experience. It is the lens through which we examine the world and judge it.

So the basic question is historically theological and is essentially Who started it? But we can as look at it as is there a Universal Right and Wrong? ABSOLUTES run counter to the postmodern drivel being spoon fed to the unquestioning masses. This guiding principle has shaped me. It made me give up my support of the Death Penalty and may one day (God forbid) make me a vegetarian (if they can prove cows have the capacity to morally reason).

Killing a person I feel is always wrong. Sometimes it may be necessary, but the act IS intrinsically wrong. My world changing moment came on September 12 2002 when I teacher tried to play down the attack on the World Trade Center saying that for the Hijackers what they did was not wrong. Not letting the subject die the teacher eventually said that what they did was good for them but not for me but I could not judge their opinion, I said ya because they were dead and got sent to the principals office where I just got angrier.

That is just one example though of an absolute but the easiest to understand. Moral Absolutes are what we deal with most often but this behaviour gets more treacherous the more it gets distilled. Because 2+2 does not equal 5 even if Johnny does not realize it.

I love America. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting my friends they will tell you that I am am American. I may be pure Irish, but I have never been to the Emerald Isle. The best thing that our President, Barack Obama, has done is bring national pride back. People are happy to be American again, it may be for different reasons than why I am proud to be an American, but I will take it. Eventually they will see how awesome America is. But why do I think America is awesome and what exactly are the reason that people should be proud of America?

Because we are the most free without our government being a joke and living in defacto anarchy. Sure we could be freer, but I fear that we would thrive less. I believe that America has struck the best possible balance between freedom and government with the possibility of existing. Look at the UN. There are less than 50 legitimate democracies. Why should we be held to the standard of countries that do not even come close to respecting their people as much as we respect them?

Our President thought that going to visit the that little piece of America in Normandy would be showing favoritism to France over Germany. Not showing respect to the 9,500 Heroes that are buried their defending Freedom. As my friend’s math professor said “Its a tough roe to hoe”. Our President just doesn’t get it. America is the best and that is not something to apologize about. Something to apologize about is when you do something wrong. Being better than is not bad…

And that is is problem. Liberals want everything to be equal even if that means dragging success down. I think that success is great and being successful means that someone has to be achieving less than you. That is the positional nature of language and of reality. The most basic metaphors of our metaphysical conceptualization are in/out above/below they wish to abolish these relationships in relation to people. Our unique balance of Freedom and government makes the US the best place to live, why else would so many people want to come here? Does Turkey, China, Cuba or Mexico have an immigration problem? No we do because we are the BEST!

The reason Conservatism is failing is not because the principles are wrong. If they were wrong why would we keep them. No it is because the current entrenched plutocrats are unwilling to defend our beliefs. We don’t get Conservative Ideas we get less liberal ideas. We compromise too much, because we want to be nice. Our ideas don’t sound nice to most people. By that I mean most people are not rich so when Liberals say we are going to take their money and give it to everyone else, subconsciously people think “I am not rich, that is like free money! I like free money!”. And what do we get to say “Welfare is a systemic problem that only breeds more welfare and more government dependence.” Not Nice. We need to change how we convey our ideas. If we ask people if they would be happy if the government forced them to mow their lawn every Saturday. Do you think they would be happy? If we asked them that for those people who do not mow their lawn they and 10 of their neighbors all have to mow 1/10 of the unmowed law. Do you think they would be happy? That is taxes and welfare. People are OK with taxes and welfare when they do not think about it. But if you make it real people will care.

Its not Conservatism that went away its our ability or our willingness to express those ideals in a meaningful way to our generation. Remember we may be nicer and more open than previous generation, but we are also more selfish. If you make it impact someone personally they will care.

Its for the Polar Bears!

Politics and Video Games. Not the Politics of video games but both issues observed and discussed. While I am still allowed to talk I will. And this blog is going to be my Exercise in the First Amendment. Not in some dumb emo way but in a way that I hope is relevant in defining how Conservatism falls short of selling its brand message to my generation and muse about ways to fix that.

Also I love video games so I will probably talk about them too. And maybe shoehorn them into my political rambelings.
